Feet suddenly changing color?!

Hello All,

My lovely Phoebe's feet have suddenly started changing color. She's White, but all four paws are, for want of a better word, stained with a pinkish stain. She's also getting brownish stains around her eyes, and her toenails are getting very dark brown with some red in them.

At first I thought it was a yeast infection, but the doc checked and she doesn't have that. It doesn't appear to be porphyrins from licking, because she doesn't lick her feet. The stains are sharply outlined, almost as if she had been standing in a shallow bucket of weak pink dye.

Her paw pads are also this color, and if I wash her feet, sometimes there's a little pinkness. Here's the weird part - (1) it came on within a week. (2) it seems to cause her no distress, there's no licking, no scratching, no indication it bugs her. (3) the brown tear stains may or MAY NOT be related, I don't know.

The doc currently has her on Apoquel to see if that helps. He thinks it's some kind of allergy that she's picking up from walking on wet grass (unavoidable here in Florida at the moment). But an allergy that doesn't make her itch?

Any information would be useful, thanks.

I had the same thing with my white bullies paws turning pink.
I washed his feet regularly with medicated shampoo and ASV rinsed and dried them properly with a hair dryer for months....it did not work.
I also tried epsom salts....did not work.
I tried expensive Silky dog shampoo....waste of time and money.

I changed his diet to completely raw, no kibble.....this worked.
I could see the change in his feet happening within a week.
  • Neil,

That's very interesting. I currently feed her Taste of the Wild Salmon, which is what she was eating before she came to me. Perhaps she just developed an allergy?

Let me ask you - Phoebe is about 48 lbs. Is there any guide I can get that would tell me how much and what kind of raw food to give her? I'm willing to do what it takes, but I have no knowledge in this area.

    Thanks,

    Mark
  • My dog was also on TOTW salmon when his feet turned pink. Whether it was the food,
    wet grass, etc... who knows?

He now eats approx 1kilo+ of meat, veg, and bone per day, half a kilo in the morning and half in the evening.
He is a very active dog and gets tons of exercise.

We feed him Lamb, Kangaroo, Horse, Turkey, Carrot, Green beans, eggs, natural yoghurt,
    blueberries.
He didn't seem to do too well on beef, and chicken seems to make him itch.

To be honest Mark, it's all trial and error. What works for mine may not work for yours.
    It's a pain in the butt...good luck.
    Bullies....gotta love'em :)
  • btw....how old is your dog ?. Mine is 16 months.
  • I believe she's around two. She's a rescue, so her early history is unknown. She's not as active as your dogs, I expect, because I live in North Florida, which is incredibly hot and humid at the moment. She used to get 3-4 miles walk every day, now we're down to two miles.

I will see what might work for her. Pity I can't get 'roo!

Thanks very much for your help.
  • You could try venison instead of Roo meat.
