Obsession with certian toys

Help... I think 9 month old Mackenzie has OCD . She is a rescue we got at 5 mon.
When we first got her she came home with a tennis ball the rescue said she loved it .I realized day one she loved it so much she did not care about anyone or anything else so we threw it away and went out and got rope balls ,rope toys and a Frisbee . Here is issue she will destroy and consume all her toys ,the ropes last the longest . She was great with the Frisbee until last week now it is her new obsession .Its great because it helps her to expend energy but she does not want to stop and once you do take it away she will try to get it back any way she can . So the question is do I take this away as well ? PS she is also a tail chaser/spinner we have been working on breaking this habit for 4 months and although she has days where she does it less she does do it every day

  • Have you tried the super kong toys or the different tough line of nylabones? Most toys do not last long in our house either, unless it is a cuddle buddy for her. I try to just have a few extra toys on hand so that if she does destroy one to the point that it is garbage I can give her a new one in return.
One thing we try to do when she is in destruction mode is to reinforce her "off" command (leave it/drop it/whatever you use) and reward her every single.time she listens, either with a treat, a pat, verbal praise, etc. I know your dogs situation and background is different but that is what we try.
Also, I keep things around that I let her destroy at times...milk jug, cardboard box, empty yogurt container. Of course she has to be closely monitored and they have to be taken away after a bit, but she thoroughly enjoys destroying them.
Good luck and I am glad to hear you have had some progress with the tail spinning! That is good news :)
  • The actual Kong is the best toy for her she has only partially destroyed 1 and she does not get to possessive over them , the Kong toys or nylabones she eats . I have realized that the spinning goes way downthe more exercise she has unfortunately she is crated during the day while we are at work she does get let out 2 or 3 times and I am really trying to convince my son to go out in the backyard and play fetch with her to wear her out. Work in progress ...
  • Our EBT destroyed everything.couches, clothes. Chairs, every toy she had until i got her a kong! She has not chewed anything up since! That being said i too think she is ocd over it as i have to trick her and snatch it off her so she will eat or sleep otherwise she plays with it until her paws and lips are raw!! The photo is what i used to come home to everyday before kong and demi were introduced ????

  • Update on Mackenzie . I can't believe she will be a year old in just a few weeks . We have narrowed the toys down Kongs for chewing and fetch ( the black one ) it takes her awhile to chew through them ,we are on #3 in 7 months and she doesn't consume them once chewed through and the AMAZING Flirt pole !! Oh My God this thing is the best toy ever and my son loves using it to play with her so she is getting lots of exercise these days . Walks everyday and constant training . I still think she has OCD and although the tail chasing /spinning is better at times she still does it . I really believe who ever had her for the first 4/5 months of her life did not treat her well but We/I Love her so much ! I can't imagine life without her .
