Headbutting???

Guillermo is 19 wks or 4 months. He is a very rambunctious and just right out naughty at times! As to be expected at his age.. He is very smart and learning fast, sometimes as people have mentioned here on the forum he can be a little nippy but it's all in good fun to him... He knows he's not allowed to nip or bite. Sometimes he will get overly excited and fall back into bad behavior more like a pack nip and I will tell him no no no no no in a really loud voice. He is very very strong already and even a pack nip feels like a a full-on bite especially to younger teenagers so I do keep after him...
Sometimes when he is really wound up or late at night I call it the "witching hour"... He will start to throw a full on tantrum similar to a toddler expecially if I say no he will start flailing his body about, running around in circles to and fro, running into walls and hucklebutting!!! He also headbutts me and tries to headbutt me. It seems like he gets frustrated because he can't nip at me so he has started head-butting me instead!!! It takes everything I have not to laugh because it is the silliest thing I have ever experienced. I have never had a dog throw a tantrum let alone headbutt me when they did not get their way!?!?!
I will have to start correcting him because it looks like a behavior he is very comfortable with [-X but obviously I am not since he had cracked my forehead and nose a couple times!!! I'm pretty sure he is made of concrete while I am not!
I know that persistence is the key. He is Simply Irresistible and wonderful so I am not worried about the future, I am just wondering if anyone else has a headbutting Bully? @-)

  • Yanking their heads up is one of the Bull Terrier specialties. Just keep your nose, teeth and jaw protected and out of the way. He'll likely never lose it entirely.
It's still good to limit this behavior, because - as you mentioned - they can be like little kids at times, not finding the off switch.
  • Mine headbutts accidentally, but not as a habit. Some say they grow up eventually, but I think they are a breed that needs constant consistent training. What they learnt last week will be forgotten if we are not teaching them the same thing next week, next month or next year.
  • @Jbird I love everything you just said :) my girl, who is only 1 yr at this point, has done great with her training but she does like to test me often. She will have a cpl days where everything I ask her she does spot on and then she will have a day or two where you can tell she is trying to push her limits. It is funny at times because you can really almost hear and see the wheels turning in her head! Just like a kid :-)
  • Haha I feel like you are describing our 4mth old. He is fine most of the time but still has his moments and they are usually in the evening just when you are ready to sit down and relax. He caught the wife's nose with his head after a crazy hucklebutt and leapt on to the sofa
  • @kstorck
After 12 months of weekly dog school, I know what my bully can understand. With the promise of a reward, such as food, she will sit, stay, walk calmly behind my heal off leash etc etc. But without that reward, she will willingly do things she knows she's not allowed, such as stick her head in the dish washer or jump on people. I can see in her face she knows she's not allowed to do it, all while her tail wags a million miles an hour. And then when she gets in trouble, I get the sink eye. Lol.
  • Too funny! We have had a few people in the neighborhood tell us our bullie looks like a shark and after some thought I can totally see it! She circles things and eyes things just like a shark does in the water and that is when I know she is probably gonna try to get away with something haha
@Mickjameslenehan my girl always seems to break into her "bully run" style when my kids are going to bed. No matter how hard I try to excite her into it outside it never fails as soon as we come in she takes off. This is one thing though I have decided to kind of let go, within reason. I tell my kids to get on their beds or stand still against the wall while she zooms up and down the stairs, hallways, bedrooms until she fizzles out. We all laugh so hard and when she is done she has such a proud and accomplished look on her face :) haha
  • It's a bully thing , my mini does it in the evenings except when it comes to my son its an all day thing she will go in his room if he leaves the door open and steal something of his .She did this to him 3 times yesterday and as he is trying to get it back she breaks out in crazy zoom mode to keep what ever she has stolen .My son is 18 and 6' tall so to watch this its pretty funny
  • My bully treats my brother (who bords with me) like this. My bro is 19 and 6 foot tall and my bully treats him like a litter mate. It's strange.
