Feeding June

Hi guys! Finally remembered my password to get back on here! Anyways, june is about 10 months old! I can't believe how fast time flies! We have already established that she is going to be a bit smaller then her litter mates. For 10 months we have had issues with feeding. I've tried almost every type of better quality foods. She will not eat anything that's in her bowl for hours unless i end up doctoring it up. Which I am not ok with. I want her to eat as soon as I put down her food. Any tips or advice on how to get her to eat at the times I want her to be eating? I know it's not the food because our neighbor has the same brand (Fromm) that he feeds his 10 mo old cheseapeake. June has no problem eating out of Boones bowl. LOL! Help! Other then that's she's spectacular! Thank you!

How about switching bowls with the other dog, if she loves it so much to take it from the other dog's bowl? :):D

I am partly serious: Have you tried to figure out any differences between the bowls and feeding places of both dogs?
Can she eat undisturbed in your home? Have you tried fresh, raw food preparations or "just" different kibbles?
Just gathering some ideas on what could be going on there with your picky eater.
  • Thanks for responding! She is our only dog and she is totally able to eat in peace! When it comes down to it I really think she only likes eating with another dog. How crazy is that? She sees Boone eating with his brother Otti and that's when she wants to get in there too. But when we are at home, unless I doctor up her food with eggs or plain yogurt she will let it sit there all day. I've switched bowls I've switched her spot. Nothing. It makes it hard when I'm leaving or her dad and she hasn't eaten yet. ????

We use free feeding method to feed our Vinnie. I know, I know, most of the people against it. But it works for us. When we got our puppy, our breeder recommended to always have food in his bowl to prevent food aggression. We followed her advice and till now Vinnie always has his kibbles. He has his own schedule, he eats only twice a day - at 11am and around 9pm. After the meal he always comes over to us with all sounds only bull terriers can make to say thank you and to share how good it was. It takes us only 2 cups of kibbles a day to feed him so we know he's not overeating. And he does not have any food aggression at all. I can take anything out of his mouth, even throat when I think it's not safe.

Maybe if you find bigger time frame to feed her, she will adjust to the schedule. Like if you have few hours in the morning and few hours at night, just leave her portion free, if she does not touch it, take it away and give it back in the evening. Give her few hours to finish her bowl, take it right away after she's done. Note what time she reaches the bowl, so u give her her bowl around that time. Once she gets used to it, you can start shifting her schedule around until you reach desired time. Just be consistent and patient :).
P.S. There is a big chance she does not like your choice of food flavor. Vinnie does not like red meat kibble, he loves alligator and catfish but his stomach does not agree. So we switched to duck and sweet potato and he loooves it. Maybe you could try some other flavors too to make her excited. There are so many flavors of quality fkibble on market, I feel bad to feed my boy something he does not like at all.
