Obsessive drinking?

My boy Monty is an obsessive drinker. He drinks so much and I'm filling his bowl constantly. I've taken him to the vet because I was concerned that there was an underlying kidney or diabetes issue. I read that was a symptom before. The vet didn't seem concerned. He appears very healthy and he is very active. Same personality. We've changed his food from raw to kibble in the last few months. He seemed to have an aversion to the raw and would only eat parts of it if I spoon fed him, literally. His food and water are elevated as I understand that cuts down on their gas. I tried putting his dish on the floor. I've tried getting him a wider bowl. I've tried putting it on a plate. I work from home so I'm able to track his habits. The water has me stumped. I do acknowledge that the kibble might be adding to this but he was doing this when he was on raw. He is not losing weight. He is 59 lbs at 14 months. Is this normal bull terrier behaviour?

  • Mine can drink 9 litres in a day, pending on how hot it is or how much she drank the day before

I'm shocked your Vet did not feel that a kidney function test was warranted. Most Vets would have encouraged the appropriate tests to ensure there are no signs of kidney disease especially on a breed type that is known for this genetic fault.
Personally, I would ask your Vet to conduct Kidney Testing to ensure he does not have any issues that need to be addressed now in order to improve his health vice finding out later when the disease has escalated to a point where little can be done.
I'm not saying your Bull Terrier has a Kidney problem but it isn't normal for a dog to be drinking water excessively and due to Kidney disease being an inherent issue within the breed it's best to have him tested.

  • I totally agree with Steve if i demanded a kidney profile back 2 years ago i would not be in the current position with by bully managing kidney disease , fluids , meds  and diet now
    Best of luck

  • Probably sounds weird but I would research Cushing's disease.
