Could chicken make her sick??

I've tried mixing about 1/4 c chicken in with her kibble for 2 days now, trying to introduce it slowly...and she vomited late last night (looked like her dinner) and she's had explosive, watery diarrhea twice. I haven't fed her anything yet today except water.

Normally chicken ranges among the most well tolerated meats for dogs. However, allergies and intolerances do occur even with this food.
The GI reaction immediately following the chicken - if newly introduced and you did not change anything else and do not suspect she could have accidentally ingested something else (something she found outside or in the trash for example) - in my opinion things point pretty strongly towards the chicken as the culprit.
Try feeding her just the usual food/kibble without the chicken for 2 days and see, if the vomiting and diarrhea vanish.

If not, I guess it's probably time to see a vet.
Make sure that she drinks enough. If she is not eating, but is on a vitamin/mineral supplement and drinking enough, she should be good. But you could also try and put some veggie or beef broth into her water to make sure her body also gets some minerals back. Also that might help encourage her to drink. Yet, under these circumstances I would avoid chicken broth.
  • From my time working in a dog hotel (I hate calling it a kennel...it was very fancy lol) I did see a handful of dogs there that had a chicken allergy. Honestly it's the only protein allergy I ever remember seeing, though I'm sure dogs could have an intolerance to anything. Personally I do tend to opt for other proteins than chicken in both kibble and treats, though a mix of chicken and something is fine. My dog doesn't show any signs of allergies, that's just me being weird. :D  when she's sick I also opt for ground turkey rather than chicken.

Djammy's advice is good. Perhaps you could get her back to normal and then try with another protein? Also is it raw or cooked? Raw definitely might not sit as well as cooked.
  • Thank you for your advice. Again! I'm so thankful to be a part of this bully family. It's honestly the first place I come to for trusted advice. I stated her on the chicken in Friday and she seemed fine with it. It wasn't until about 2:30 this morning that she vomited, so who knows. Maybe she ate something in the backyard. That's the only place she's alone, and that's brief as it is. But I don't need to tell you they're like greased lightening, lol. And she never has access to garbage cans. Anyway, I went to the store and got some beef broth, Pedialyte, ground beef, rice, and cottage cheese. So far, I've given her some diluted broth and she drank that right down. She had a pretty ugly poop...not watery like it was, but loose. Kinda yellow and gelitanous. I'm going to fast her for the next 12 hours and see how she does. I slept on the couch with her all night and most of the day, and I think she's worried that I'm sick, cause she basically slept on my head. :)
    Thanks again!
  • I think she thinks I'm the sick one

  • Thank you, Quinnofhearts, it was cooked chicken. Boiled, no skin, no fat. And she doesn't get chicken from any other source.
  • Introduce it slowly and over time

    This may help
  • I thought I went slow enough, but I've just completely stopped all food until the diarrhea subsides. ( which it pretty much has, but I'm just giving her white rice and beef broth for the rest of the day to be on the safe side)
  • When I upped my chicken my guys got diarrhea also

So I had to slow down and try smaller amounts

And get them used to it
  • Happy all is ok. :)
