Running Mate

Hi

I wondered if anyone on the forum had any knowledge/experience of jogging with their Bully. I have read on line lots of articles but they all say different ages for different breeds and there does not seem to be a hard and fast rule on age. I am not a runner myself so we would both be starting off lightly and building our way up.
Little bit of information to help with any feedback:
it will be warm, i am living in Thailand at the minute so whilst it will be early evening/morning, will still be 85f ish
he LIKES walking, no pulling, no stubborn bum plants etc
it will be on a mixture of ashphalt, sand, dirt and gravel
he is 6 months old male and about 40llbs
he likes to chase me as a game so i was going to incorparate that into the learning to run with me bit

any feedback on tips, ages to start etc is helpful and anything you want to ask fire away.....

  • i was thinking on leash too, his recall is very good i would say about 80% off leash but I am not sue how to distinguish in his mind its ok to run after me but not others if he is off leash and all i need is an irate local thinking my dog is running after him to eat him :).

    so is off/on leash better?
if he is on leash, i would never force or pull him if/when he has had enough

I too spent a lot of time jogging with my Bull Terriers especially when I
was still on active duty in the Marine Corps. Now that I am retired
after 21 years in the service I have backed off from all the jogging,
    lol.
Many people will say you should never allow a puppy too much
running or exercise when they are young because they are still
developing. This is true to a certain extent. However, exercise is still
needed for both physical and mental development. The difficult part is
knowing when enough exercise is enough.
    For jogging purposes, I
would get a puppy into jogging until they were around 5 months old at
which time I would only allow the puppy to jog about 1 mile. However, by
the time the puppy was around 8-10 months old they had no issues with
jogging 3 miles. A nice slow paced jog on a dirt path would be great
for any dog. Upon maturity my Bullies had no problems jogging 6+ at my
    pace without stopping.
The conditioning and level of energy with
every Bull Terrier various. The best thing you can do is pay close
attention to your Bullie when you initiate your exercise program with
him. Don't be in a big rush to start him running if he is still very
    young.
