Homeowners insurance

Well......after my recent marriage the wife and I are looking for new insurance to consolidate all our plans.....an insurance broker asked what dogs we had and said the doberman won't be an issue normally but many companies won't insure pit bulls....I said "no sir its an english bull terrier"....."oh! ok! like a bulldog"....."no an english bull terrier , like a target dog"...."oh ill look more into that". Anyone else get the runaround from insurance companies? Clearly this guy doesn't know what hes talking about!

  • When we decided to get our BT pup I just told the landlord we have an english terrier and left out the bull to avoid the run around lol. Once people hear "bull" in a breed's name they think the worst a large majority of the time.

Our rates actually came back lower than before so maybe the guy cleared it up. I just hate when people judge. I've been walking to doberman and heard multiple comments from people how their kids need to stay away and how mean "that" dog is. Oh well so is life. In my younger days I would have liked to use this response "Oh no she's friendly and wouldn't harm a fly, but I will gladly make up for it if you would like." Don't think the wife would like that these days though.

Last year I moved to a small town of 1300 people.
Kinda like Mayberry from the Andy Griffith show for you old timers.

For the 1st six months I kept hearing....
Hey your the new guy from Lansing with the friendly Pitbull. :-@
  • We've never been asked if we own a dog let alone what breed by our home insurance agent, maybe because we live in a condo.

BUT I'm so sick and tired of ignorant people telling me "pit bulls are against the law in Ontario" or "is that a pit bull" in a disapproving tone, then there's the passive aggressive types that stare, glare and frown at us or the frown and cross the street self-righteous types.

I live in a boring middle class neighborhood with way too may p/c people, it's gotten to the point that I just stare them in the eye and keep calmly reaping "English Bull Terrier" over and over again till they move on.

Rant over and Frankie says Hi !

  • These days everyone has a negative comment about everything. I have never judged a dog solely on it's breed much like I would not judge a person on their appearance. However if a dog is snarling at me with its hair on it's back up I would probably keep my distance.

For the record here is a list of breeds that have bitten people I know: Sheltie, chiahuahua, and goldendoodle.....don't think any of them would be on some type of blacklist.

Any dog can be aggressive if not raised properly.
  • Funnily enough here in the UK there is a huge story making headlines and even on television about a dog named Hank he is a labrador cross staffy taken without permission by the council because " he might be a pitbull " this was someone's home they just took him and left a note. On a televised interview the two presenters were awful one even saying she would never adopt a bull terrier or staffordshire bull terrier because it might have urges and they scare her it's easy to find just search #savehank .
Never by insurance but I've had trouble with doggy day cares and dog walkers! Luckily I've found a brilliant doggy day care he goes to for socialising with dogs he's made friends with a bull terrier puppy named Dora  ( how cute is that name! ) a staffordshire bull terrier named Bear and a springer spaniel called Cooper they make an assessment on behaviour and take any breed he's met akitas, dobermans, staffys , other bull terriers , huskies aswell as the usual labradors , poodles , spaniels etc just have to hint around a bit more for places that don't judge a dog by its breed
