Introducing a new dog to a 10 month old male

Recently my girfriends friend came to stay and brought her 3 year old female chihuahua with her. I was a bit worried about how vinny would react but to my amazement he loved it and was super playfull, despite the chihuahua not liking him and flat out trying to attack him. He mearly jumped out of the way, tail wagging having so much fun. Im not sure the same can be said for the chihuahua tho. It got me thinking that maybe id like to get another sog to keep my boy company while were at work. Ive been told that males dont do well if you introduce another dog at this stage in his life but he is used to having the cat around and even lets it eat his food. He seems very different around small dogs almost like he knows they offer no threat to his status. I no hed love to have a dog to play with i just dont know if the playfullness would last or turn into aggresion once the dust has settled.
Has anybody got experience of this??

  • I THINK HE WILL LOVE IT. AS LONG AS ITS NOT A MALE. BUT WHOS TO SAY I GOT A BULLY ONE YEAR OLD. ROTTY PUP 9 WEEKS AND STANKY BUTT BIANCA AT 6 YEARS......ALL UNSPAYED. MISS WAS GRATEFUL TO HAVE A FRIEND. REALLY. I mentioned earlier miss drags and slings the pup around and SHE LOVES IT. HUBBY GETS TIRED OF HEARING BIANCA and let's miss play with the pup. IM GLAD THEYRE FRIENDS THIS LITTLE ROT HAS ATTITUDE ALONG WITH TEETHING...... IM GLAD SHE HAS MISS AND BIANCA INSTEAD OF CHEWING On ME......

Sounds like your Bull Terrier has a great temperament and personality. I wouldn't be too worried about aggression if you aren't seeing jealousy issues or past aggression towards other dogs. Chances are he'll simply become best friends with another good natured dog that you bring into the house.

  • I do actually have some experience from this. Our male Bullie Max was the only dog in the house until he was about 1.5 years old.

At that time we adopted a 6 months old female lab, Penny.

Max actually matured very fast when Penny came into his life and sort of took her under his wings, showing her the ropes and how things worked. He even matured to the extent that it seemed that he had lost a lot of his puppy antics and playfulness for awhile. It was like he thought, "I've got some responsibilities around the farm now, better not disappoint the boss". To this day he continues to "correct" Penny (in a very mild fashion) when he thinks she is doing something wrong ;-)

Penny has stuck to Max like he is her big brother and 1.5 year later they are the best of buddies.
