Coexisting with a cat

Hey all! I have a question.. Has anyone on here raised one of their bullie puppies around cats? I have a almost 10 week old male bullie (Ollie) and we have a 2 year old indoor cat. So far the two are getting along pretty well other than our little boy chasing and pinning down the kitty and humping him. Whenever I see this happening I immediately get Ollie off the kitty and put him on his side and keep him there telling him no until he calms down.  I know that this is just a dominance thing and Ollie is trying to establish himself as the boss of the kitty, but we are trying to instill to Ollie (key word trying) that kitty was here first and you need to respect him. I know this task could be almost impossible considering the nature of bullies, but do you think that I'm handling the situation properly? Has anyone else had any experience with this?

Thanks!

  • I think your handeling this really well and giving some time and enough persistance from you this behavior should quit!! Mine live with 2 indoor outdoor kitties and I havent had them ever try to hump them just chase and ocassinally nip but as they got older its not as much fun or their sick of being scolded wichever:)

  • I think as a puppy Ollie is most likely just humping due to ignorance and hormones, they can tend to hump a lot at that age as they are just young and stupid. Claxxton would hump pillows when we first got him. Does the cat swat and bite and the puppy? Sometimes that will be enough to deter them and I would allow the cat to just kind of beat up the puppy a little unless of course the cat doesn't or is just way too small LOL
  • He's a lot stronger than the cat, sometimes the cat will his at him and hit him a few times in the head with his paws (he's declawed) and basically it has the same effect as throwing cotton balls against a brick wall. it doesn't phase Ollie in the least haha.
  • Also, hissing doesn't phase him either
  • Hes when she was a pup and showing off her battle scars but this was no small kitty!!!

I have 3 elderly cats who i will NOT allow the dogs to push around PERIOD! my cats are old and cannot take these guys. so from day one puppy or new dog is kept on lead, if i ever catch them stareing at my cats, chaseing the cats, standing over the cats ect they get a firm lead jerk from me and a verbal "AH!" to let them know that cats are to be ignored 100% of the time.

i also make sure htey respect my cats when i give the cats food, if i give my cats food, they are not allowed to go near the cats while they eat it, if im petting my cats they are not allowed to simply butt in and try pushing hte cats away from me or off my lap.

my bed is strictly off-limts to the dogs because my cats have claimed it as there safe haven from the dogs, so i make the dogs respect that. give your cat a specific area that your boy is not allowed to invade, a cat bed,a specific chair your cat likes ect.

i know alot of people think i give my cats speciel treatment-that i favor them, i dont show favortism, but my cats are old and simply could not protect themselves should an adult bully decide to go after then one day, one bite to the head or neck or spine could cause death. so im strict about it.

here is a video from when Cesar was only about 7-8 months old with 2 of my cats

as you can see in the video i never ONCE gave him a command to "leave
it" because i expected him to respect the cats, without a command, the
cats have food, i cant have their food. was his mentality, im still
working on the food bussiness with Chimera, as she is extremly food
obsessed and will try to be sneaky about taking there food. it takes
    time.

  • Was that something that came natural to him or did you work with him as a puppy
  • excellent video kimberly !
  • just lots of socializing.  living together with cats. he never chaces deer, birds, cats.  my little bro doesnt have little animal aggression.  i have pictures of a pet rat sleeping on his head.  only time my dog gets grumpy is if somebody trys to break in to my car or if there is another dog with nuts. but thats never been too much of an issue. just some bickering which is natural
  • Who loves the kitty!!!!

  • My boyfriend and I are going to be moving in together this spring. He has 3 adult bullies..and I have 2 cats. I've read that integrating the two families IS possible but is generally done when the bullies are pups... Most of my findings have not been favourable for my cat's wellbeing to say the least if not done early.

Is bring these two pet families together wishful thinking?? Any thoughts on how we can make this work.

That is going to be VERY difficult unless all 3 Bull Terriers are well socialized with other animals to include cats. Most Bull Terriers that have not been socialized with cats will not get along with them. I'd hate to give you false hope and find out something happened to your cat because if one of your boyfriends Bull Terriers goes after your cat he will do damage quickly and could easily kill your cat. Your cats may also have no toleration for dogs and the combination of a scared and aggressive cat against a Bull Terrier who may not feel bad at all about taking out the cat may be a dangerous situation. I'm sorry but I think it would be a very rare case that you'd be able to manage the introduction of 3 adult Bull Terriers with 2 adult cats.

  • we have been lucky with our cat he has allways seemed to like dogs, when friends have visited he comes to join in although he dosnt want them too close,so we where happy to bring a bully in,billy is 7yrs old and is happy to sit around kaya but when she gets excited she wants to jump on him to play so they have to be supervised all the time as scared she will hurt him with her weight, she is not agressive in any way and i think once she calms down she is 6months old things should settle down nicely and they will become great friends

That's great! It sounds like they are already friends.
