Frogs

edited May 2014 in General
Well, Rodney had his first--and probably last--encounter with a frog the other night.  He was on roach-killing duty, so we thought that was what he lunged for, but it was a frog.  We saw him instantly fling it out of his mouth as fast and hard as he could.  It went flying, then hurried away.  Poor little guy was shaking his head and foaming at the mouth.  When we got back home, he was sniffing around a spot in the yard where we've seen frogs leaping.  He was sniffing for a few seconds, then shook his head violently, I guess from the memory of his first frog.

It freaked me out.  I thought for sure we'd have to take him to the emergency vet, but online we overwhelmingly saw that it just makes them foam and that they will never, ever again go after a frog.  He threw up a little afterwards, but seemed fine.

Anyone else's dogs have encounters with frogs?

  • Stoeger 'plays' with toads every once in a while. He foams at the mouth but keeps pouncing and playing. I try to save the road when I see him do it but sometimes I'm a little late. But he never learns and every time he sees one he goes after it, haha!
    Hopefully Rodney learned his lesson!

Oh I Can't tell you how many times I've experienced that before with several Bullies. Some actually learn others don't. I have plenty of toads that show up at night hoping around the yard and I can always tell when you of my Bullies comes in from outside and they're foaming at the mouth. They're used to it now and a couple of them just find it fun to kill them and leave them for me mulch with the mower during lawn day.

  • That's so funny that one will come in with a foaming mouth, lol.  So it sounds like they sometimes learn lessons, and sometimes they don't.  Stoeger's a cutie.  I'm betting it will be the same here.  It's probably rather hard to resist when the toad goes leaping by right in front of them.

Thanks for letting me know it's not dangerous, just a foamy mess.
  • LOL! That made me laugh! I'm surprised we even have any frogs between our yard and Steve's. Apollo's one of those that haven't learned his lesson!
  • Ummmm...seems like Rodney hasn't learned his lesson.  He gobbled up another one and flung it out, shaking his head and foaming at the mouth like a total Ground Hog's Day.

This time, when the frogs in the background would be croaking loudly, he'd shake his head remembering the taste that was probably still in his mouth.

My Bullies have killed so many toads around the house I have lost count. I can't tell you how many times they have come back inside the house foaming at the mouth and heading straight for their water bowl. Some learn their lessons while others have too much fun hunting them down and killing them. I actually think Makoa has gotten immune to them because she kills them all the time by chomping down on them often into pieces and then goes about her merry way. I realize there are some toads which are more harmful than others so I can only assume the ones in my neck of the woods aren't all that bad.  :-??
