Elk Antlers for Bull Terriers

BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC
At the last dog show I attended there was a vendor selling all kinds of chew bones and antlers. I asked him what he considered to be the very best for a dog that chewed hard and could go through any bone in a matter of minutes. He recommended Elk Antler. He said they lasted a lot longer than deer antler and no raw hide, bully stick, nyla bone, etc could stand up to one. He went on by saying a half cut Elk Antler normally lasts 3 weeks with a heavy chewer. With all this said I purchased one. Cost me $16 for a Half Cut antler.
The antler went through 4 different Bullies and lasted exactly 11 days with Very heavy chewers. Never have I seen a more durable chew bone than this. I wish i bought some more. Yes, they are costly but in the 11 days my Bullies chewed on it for Many Hours.

(The photo below shows the exact antler I purchased. However, Nitro was actually chewing on it for about 2 hours during the show before I took the photo. You can see the teeth marks on the inside narrow end)

  • Cool!

I have heard good things about elk antlers as well as moose antlers- do not see them sold very often though.

Easily found on the internet with a little searching. They are Maya's preferred chews and they last forever. This is where we get ours: http://www.bestelkantlers.com

The photo is a bit blurry because she was really working the antler over pretty good!

  • I got my bully boy, Champ, an Elk antler last week. He initially didn't show much interest for it, even though I paid good $$ for it. Until my husband got down on the floor, and started to imitate to chew on it. That certainly got Champ's attention !!!  He tried to take it away from my husband. My husband would not let go of it, continued to pretend to chew on it, requested that Champ to share the antler. By now, this became a fun game for Champ. When he wants to play this game, he will come near my husband, and make noise with chew bone to let him know that he wants to play this antler chew sharing game. Still a lot left on this big antler for more fun times !!!! Stay tuned.

Thanks for that link Mark. Much better prices than I imagined. I'm going to order a bag of split antlers.

  • No problem Steve. Once you get on their mailing list they have specials occasionally. We tried the splits, fillets I think they call them, and Maya and Bear loved them because the marrow is exposed. But the "go to" is the whole antler. Funny stuff, Maya has one and so does Bear. Maya wants Bear's and Bear wants Maya's.

They must be fierce chewers to be able to conquer a non-cut elk antler. Many dogs will give up and leave it alone if there's no marrow exposed. I have some chewers like that but on the other hand I have some that will give up on it if the reward isn't easily available. I'll get the half cuts for now and maybe order some full antlers for my over achievers.

  • I have seen elk at Petsmart for around the same price. Cheaper than bestbullysticks. Anybody tried the kangaroo bone? I heard that was pretty tough as well.
  • Oh I need to get some of these!!!
