Puppy Mush

Here is some good advice on puppy mush, thanks Steve!..... To explain what "Mush" is it's a combination of Puppy Milk Formula and
Ground up puppy food. It is used during the weaning stages of a puppy.
Usually a litter of puppies will develop teeth around 3 1/2 weeks old.
Around 4 weeks of age it is appropriate to start weaning them away from
the mother. Not only is it good for the mother to be relieved of the
constant feeding from puppies who by this time are pretty big and have
teeth but it's also good for the proper growth and development within
the litter of puppies. With this said, a good quality puppy food is
ground up to almost a powder. It is then placed in a shallow pan where
normal puppy formula is poured over it and mixed to form a "Mush."
During the first couple days the puppies will make a mess of it while
they are learning to lap and eat solid foods. Obviously supervision is
highly warranted so they aren't stepping into it or breathing it in
through their noses while they're learning. Puppies usually learn to eat
VERY quick and get the knack of it fast. As the puppies progress in
eating the dry puppy food is ground up less and less while smaller
amounts of puppy formula is added. During this time puppies are usually
completely weaned from the mother and staying in a weaning box without
the mother. they can be provided a bowl of water as they learn to drink
water. Usually by the age of 6 weeks old puppies are at the point where
they are eating normal puppy food without the need of adding puppy
formula to form a "Mush" and the puppies are also drinking water from a
bowl freely. From the ages of 6-8 weeks the puppies will grow rapidly
and they will be eating with confidence by the time they go to their new
homes at 8 weeks of age.
