Kilacabar bloodlines

So I was on Facebook and read a comment of Kilacabar bloodlines having less than stellar temperament dogs in the line. Any truth to this? Both my dogs share this line and as we know I have good and "was" bad temperament issues. . Just peaked my interest to read this and was wondering on or any input of others.

At one time many years ago Kilacabar had an excellent reputation for top quality Bull Terriers. You'll find that many of the top EBT's in this country have lineage going back to Kiliacabar bloodlines.
Over the past 10 years I haven't seen too much come in the way of Kilacabar that was impressive and I don't think they're actively breeding or exhibiting much any more.
I've never hear that there was any negative aspects in regard to temperament issues within the bloodline. Most things noted on the bloodline were always of positive nature thus the reason so many others wished to utilize their bloodline for the betterment of their own.
Now a days when I see Kilacabar bloodlines within a pedigree the lineage is back in the 4th or longer generation. That had some very nice champion EBT's back then. Now if you visit their website you'll notice it hasn't been updated in about 6 or 7 years as though they just lost interest in updating their website.
I too have had (and still have) EBT's that show Kilacabar bloodlines in their pedigree and none of them have aggression problems. I have a lot of respect for the Kilacabar lines and think there was very good reason why so many others in England as well as outside the country sought their bloodlines for the betterment of their own.

  • Just out of curiousity, when they blame Kilacabar for the bad temperaments, is it both a dam and a sire from Kilacabar that produced the current negative, or are they further back in the pedigree as great grand sire and dam, like Steve said. Makes me wonder if people just blame that line because it is the most well known in the BT in that pedigree. Kinda like if I had bred one of my dogs with Bullies of NC and they had a negative, Bullies of NC would be the ones who get their names dragged down because they are more well known then the other line. Hope that makes sense.

Ps.... CM has a few Kilacabar grand sires/dams and he has an amazing temperament, very calm for a EBT, especially a male puppy BT!

Cookie just has a great grand sire on her sires side of the family tree from Kilacabar and she is defiantly more of a handful them CM.

  • This was im assuming someone's opinion. I haven't heard anything negative till this. This line is on the sire side and 3 rd generation. Is it possible this line has gotten in the wrong hands over the years??

  • In my "not professional" opinion, lol, I think it is just negative hype. Unless you have a whole lineage of only Kilacabar and aggressive dogs, then maybe, just maybe, you might have a more solid foundation for saying the aggressive streak came from that lineage, but if you only have a few I believe that there was some inappropriate breeding somewhere in the middle and the more well known name was to blame even though that was not the lineage that contributed the negative factor.
  • Brutus has quite the pedigree on his sires side!
  • Thats definitely where he gets his hefty from!! I would be willing to guess as far as Brutus goeshis neggative side came from an inexperianced owner and a puppy stage not corrected appropriately,I cant even blame my breeder rightfully. Hes defanatly less tolerant than her but weve come along way both him and I!!!! I have to say he was well over a handful!! The only reason I have the pedigrees was just for fun but look at all I've learned!!!

  • There seems to be quite a few nasty rumours floating around about some of the better known breeders these days. I usually put it down to jealousy. I sure can't see how anyone could blame a bad temperament on a Kilacabar dog based on the above pedigree.
  • I wonder why bestovall is misspelled, I'm pretty positive it should be bestuvall, that's Jan Dykema's line and she has some really nice dogs. I've met a few and all are very well mannered and drop dead gorgeous!
