Will my puppy hurt my Maltese?

Caesar is now 14 weeks old and has been with us since 7 weeks old.

I also have a 9 year old male maltese who is very placid. My puppy has certainly dominated my Maltese in the short time they have been together and they play beautifully together off the most part, with the exception that Caesar bites the malteses ear a little to hard and Zeke yelps.

I am concerned as the bullie grows and reaches sexual maturity that he is going to hurt Zeke, probably unintentionally. What are the chances of them living harmoniously together?

  • I think they will be fine as long as you stick up for the weak link if she's not doing it herself. The BT more than likely will be dominate but needs to be respectful as well. No being unruley or pushy you are the leader THEY FOLLOW YOU EQUALLY.
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.

I have three bull terriers and a pug, the one who rules the house is my pug. He is a very confident old fat guy and doesn't take crap from anyone. As long as they both see you as the leader, everything should be good.

Caesar sounds like every other normal Bull Terrier puppy. His he's a little tyrant and wants nothing more than to antagonize every dog he meets with those razor sharp teeth. One thing you won't have to worry about is Caesar deciding to straight out attack Zeke when he gets older. If Caesar is disciplined and trained as he is now he will be just fine. Having him socialized with Zeke right now is good and both dogs will eventually become best friends. Caesar just doesn't understand how to play nicely and correctly with other dogs right now. He will learn.
I too have a little tyrant prowling the house looking to engage in a wrestling match with any dog that crosses her path. Her name is Nitress and she too is a normal behaved Bullie with a lot of spunk. My wife's French Bull Dog (Ruger) beats her up every time she pounces on him. Those two run all over the place biting at each others arms, trying to tow each other around by their collars, and raising as much havoc as feasibly possible. I've get I've seen it before many times as we've raised other BT puppies that I'm unbothered by it. It feels like only yesterday Rocky was the terror of the house. Now he's the push over and condones all kinds of craziness from other dogs and puppies.
Caesar will not remain the Tasmanian Devil you see today. It's just a puppy phase. If you want to judge his true character, temperament, and personality you have about a 24 month wait in order to get any accuracy and much of the results will depend on his training and attention he's receiving now.

Nitress is a beauty! Stoeger plays so damn rough with dogs that I'm scared to let him play. I don't want the other owners to think he is attacking but idk wht to do about it.

Find Stoeger a playmate. Does one of your friends own a dog? You should be socializing him with other dogs. I'm sure a friend or relative won't mind his puppy antics. Heck, bring him on over here and we can let Stoeger and Nitress wear each other out!

Takes time. Sorry guys wasn't able to respond during thanksgiving vacation but hope you all had a good one.

Anyways, for Spud it was socializing him from three months out. Luckily we have a supervised social near me every Saturday at Spud's daycare for puppies once a week. Once he got his third set of vaccinations I started the dog park. They will calm down. Spud has calmed down since and likes to just put his nose in other dogs faces now at ten months instead of the usual nipping like before.

@Stoeger- they play rough, there will always be overprotective dog owners but there will be some who allow them to just be dogs and play. Find those people cuz they understand how it is to have a high energy dog breed and are understanding.
  • I think Ruger and Nitress are battling it out for the biggest ears in the house Steve!!!

Stoeger does have a playmate, Tyler the Rat Terrier. Just the other day that we need to get them together for another play date. She absolutely wears him out. He's twice her size now though... The tables may have turned!
  • Yea, we only have one friend with a dog and no family here. We meet other dogs around town but he has always been loud and rowdy and scares the owners. But the rat terrier owners says they will work it out. Stoeger just follows it around and she wants NOTHING to do with him. Oh well. He can be in areas with them and he is fine so I'm ok with it. He doesn't attack just plays loud and rough.
  • @stoges_mom yogi pretty much tries to photobomb all my pictures with his happy face. Of course I was being sarcastic about his happy face, he looks grumpy all the time!
  • My two pups play so rough with my jack russle i feel sorry for him but he usaully lets them know when enough is enough. They seem to have alot of respect for him at this stage.
  • Thanks folks, I hope Caesar is respectful of my old friend and they continue to play nice!
