Freindly discussion on Bull Terriers

edited April 2013 in General

Just wanted to begin a nice discussion on Bull Terrier conformation, have been wanting to for a while but didnt wanna start any sort of argument, but i dont think anyone here will get crazy on me :)

So who are some of your favorite Bull Terriers? genetic lines? color, type ect? (TOTALLY feel free to post pictures and names of dogs if you can!)

i have to say my absolute FAVORITE Bull Terrier i have ever seen is from Hulia Bull Terriers named alvie heres a few pictures of him, he is so gorgeous!

  • That truly is a gorgeous bull terrier! Lovely short back and top line, perfect expression, though i dont think the ears are supposed to curve like that. He almost looks like a mini.

For me whats most important are feet, tight and round and standing on the tip toes, ears NOT floppy I hate it. Small eyes, bullies with big round eyes are a big no no for me. I prefer bullies with NO splash marking (white on the back or rear end) and solids are my favorite, esp in the face and around the neck like the picture you posted. I prefer a strait top line or back, thats not roachy (high in the ass). Shorter is better IMO with a good sized chest and bone and substance, and DEFINE muscle. Hate when people pack weight on a dog but there is no muscle definition. A round head from the side , even all the way down with NO dip beneath the eyes, and egg shape when looking from the front. I hate when people take photos of their dogs but do not take proper stack photos and you can not see the whole dog, feet and all for a proper idea of how the dog is structured. Here are some of the dogs I find exceptional.

the red dog is hell boy and the white is rebelside john wayne

  • I know I'm so gonna sound old but I love Spuds Mackenzie!!! Brindle is my favorite color same for a pit. And if I could pick any dog to own that I know of I would say Lucian I think he's awesome!! As for lovable Claxton I just love his face!! I love the big bullies my Brutus is doing soo much better with my son and in general and I love his markings and his build as well but I'm a little bias their!!! This pic you posted Is a beautiful dog!!
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • love the red!!!!
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • is that UKUSA's Hell boy? He is also one of my favorites, he is beautiful! im also a huge fan of solids, my favorite solid color is solid tri (basically black and tan points) like Drays Bagerah (sp?) The male i pictured is only 6 months old in the pics so im assuming the ears had been taped, hence the inward curve.

Must agree about feet, poor feet on BT just looks terrible, painful almost, a while back i seen a picture of a BT who was nearing 4 months i belive whos feet were as flat and splayed as a ducks and all i could think was "OUCH!!"

heres a video of a gorgeous male at crufts i found on youtube, i just love how cocky he is and i love his exspresion, he is the solid red male they zoom in second fro mteh red and white male.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JIvg1467SI&list=LLAV2SM2TuR4IIX13KWJhe2w

dunno who he is but i would LOVE to have him!

  • Yea I have seen him before on that video, good looking dogs. Yes it's hell boy. I wouldnt worry too much about a puppy nearing 4 months with bad feet, it can take some time to develop, and puppies can often have poor feet until they get older, there are ways to help the feet turn out better, and there are ways that can ruin them.

That was a good video of some nice UK Bull Terriers. I liked the first Red and White male.

The photo of black brindle has been posted all over Facebook. I love his color. There's a lot more recent photos of him out there too. The only thing I don't like about the photos is that they always widen them out to present a wider head and muzzle than truly what he possesses. Even that second photo above has been widened. That was an earlier photo of him as a puppy so his ears were still in the training to stand stage. His ears stand nicely now.

Personally I think UK on average has the USA beat when it comes to better looking EBT's. That video above is a good example of some gorgeous Bullies all of which are thick and muscular just the way I like them.

I too love the brindles. My wife loves the Red and Whites and doesn't care for too much smut. She doesn't like saddleback (or splash as Danielle refers to) markings.

  • I have to agree with you about the UK dogs! i originally was asking around about breeders/dogs in the UK and boy did the US breeders get there panties in a real TWIST 'whats wrong with OUR dogs??"  "uh, nothing i just perfere the look of many from teh UK is all"  "how dare you call our dogs ugly!"   "uh.... i didnt" but unfortunatly many breeders want you to come vist them a million times before they decide weather or not your fit to buy one and i could manage a single trip out to pick up a puppy, but deff not 10 or 12 only to be told no anyways should they decide im not a good enough owner.

That's crazy, but oh so true! It's a big monopoly between some of the club breeders who want to ensure they get the best bang for the buck when they sell a puppy. The whole sit down, in person interview is to ensure they sell their puppy to a person who will not only provide them with a good home but also contract into an agreement to show the dog a certain amount of times per year, finish the dog into champion, agree to co-ownership, and ensure there will be as much future financial gain as possible. With the co-ownership agreement you might as well consider yourself leasing the dog from the breeder who will always be the TRUE owner and control every aspect of future breeding as well as reaping the benefits of owning 50% of all puppies produced by the dog he "Leased" you. Real professional, huh? In the event the breeder doesn't feel you are going to dedicate yourself to ensure you conduct everything as planned then you become a "bad candidate for the breeder to make future profits"  Oops did I just spill the beans on those breeders,  I meant to say "a bad candidate for the welfare of the puppy."  LMAO   =))

  • how do they widen the photos to make his look wider? how can you tell they do that?
  • Wanted to show you guys this dog, i seen on FB, i wonder if this has been photoshopped as the dog looks as if its been on steroids! image

That photo of the solid brindle above has NOT been photoshop'd or edited. Just a real healthy dog that's been well cared for. You can tell just by the looks of his nails and feet let alone his muscle tone and coat. He looks real nice.

  • If you could see Bull Terriers in ANY color/coat pattern (and it was healthy, with excellent conformation) what would you like to see?

i personally would love to see Merle Bullies, or pure, solid black, no brindling, no white. i think that would be amazing!

i did see an almost solid black BT once on someones fb page, had just a few tiny bits of white on it and no brindling/red it was awsome!

  • this was just found on FB

a blue patched bull terrier im going to try getting some info on himimage

  • That bullie is not blue, he is chalked and they chalked his black markings as well, which is stupid IMO, when I chalk mine, I make sure not to cover markings. It is very obvious it is chalked, and quiet a bit actually, otherwise you would see his calasses on his legs and probably discoloration of fur, a lot of breeders keep dogs in kennel runs which can cause that, and bullies are very easy to get calasses.

I agree merle would be absolutely stunning, red or blue! I would like to see a solid red bull terrier with no white and no smut markings!
  • "That bullie is not blue, he is chalked and they chalked his black markings as well, which is stupid "

thats dissapointing :( woulda been very awsome....

i agree on a red dog with no white or smut markings that would be cool!

  • BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC

That white and black brindle above is WELL chalked and rightfully so. But no amount of chalk can hide his hardened calluses on his legs.

I'd like to see a true red Bullie with a small white patch on the chest, no saddleback markings, no white tail tip, and a white muzzle. That would look awesome in my eyes.

A "true" Solid Black Bullie with a small white spot on the chest would be very nice but the EBT genes would never let it happen. I guarantee you'll never see a true solid black Bullie. AKC is smart when they label them Black Brindles because the truth is there is always brindle in the coat and it's usually towards the bottom of their legs or on their cheeks. I've had some puppies that were real close and believe me if I wanted to take some calculated photos of them that "hid" the brindle from the naked eye I could have but what the point he was a striking puppy that got a lot of attention. Here's a picture of one that was from Cyra x Buck litter:

  • He was a doll! kind of reminds me of Chimeras brother
  • What a super brindle above!! And this black puppy is super as well he does appear all black you have to really stare to c the brindle.... I do like the smut!! but what are saddlebags the big white blotches???
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC

A saddleback marking is any white marking you see on the dogs back. Often Bridles, Tri's, and Red and White's have them. Some big, some small, and all unique to themselves. Nothing wrong with saddleback marks on a colored Bullie. However, what you don't want to see is a saddleback mark on a white bull terrier where they have a black spot on their back or ass.

  • Here are two brindles I find really impressive looking. The bigger adult male is named Gales, and I have reserved a puppy from him in the future. If I can find a bull terrier nearing damn perfect in my mind it would be him, he's in mexico, but luckily a friend of mine is breeding one of his bitches to him, and hes not too far to get a puppy from. He has a lot of action lines in him, hes 7 years old now and still producing like a champ!! #1 bull terrier in my mind. The puppy was recently bred, his colors are amazing and I am also looking at the repeat breeding from the parents in the near future to see if another comes out with those fabulous colors.

  • he is Gorgeous! and i love the pup! Brindle was never a favorite color of mine, till i seen a few nice looking solid brindle dogs.

its huge bts like that i would just love to meet in person a give hugs to to feel how solid they are...yeh...im weird lol

  • I didnt used to like brindles either, and actually it really has to be a certain shade of brindle and well marked otherwise i dont like them.
  • i used to not like tris either, im still picky about Tris, i like a nicely marked tri with clean markings, if the markings spread into the other markings, i dont care for them like if theres alot ofwhite fur mixed into the black or too much  red mixed into the white.

Well, since we're posting photos I figured I'd through a few out there myself.

The following two pictures are of a Black Brindle and White that I think looks very nice as well as a younger Black Brindle Solid that I think has a very rare color.

Here's a puppy with the most unique looking markings I've seen:

Here's a stud from Lionhearts that we used about 10 years ago. Yes, an old picture but I always loved the way he looked:

  • jimmy is a mini, the one with the unique markings. the other puppy just looks black, he doesnt look brindle to me.

  • I can see a bit of brindling on his face, he sure is gorgeous however! i just adore solids!

Steve, you may have really enjoyed my last male Bully Guinness, he was a nice red/ white boy.image

very handsome pup, very severe temperment issues.

Oh, I love Red and Whites! Hell, I love all Bullies.

Danielle - the puppy you call Jimmy has many other photos on Facebook. He's full grown now and probably weighs around 60 lbs. Doesn't look anything like a Mini. I'll look for some adult photos of him. As an adult he doesn't look as cute with the markings.

You're right, that solid black EBT doesn't "appear" to have any brindle in it. However, I guarantee it does. Thus the reason AKC doesn't have a color known as "Black" or "Black and White." They are either Black Brindle or Black Brindle and White. However, that photo is of a an EBT that is the closest to a true solid black that I have ever seen.

Just because the AKC doesn't have specific colors listed doesn't mean it cant or wont happen, given time, people will find ways to create colors that aren't specific to the breed. Soon liver wont be so rare, and I think given 50 years, blue, solid reds without smut and other colors will be seen. Hope the forum will be around than so we can discuss it. When I asked the owner of jimmy she told me he was a mini, ill see when I see her post next and ask her what his size is.
  • BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC
If you have her as a friend look at her photos and you should be able to see a recent one of him where he's an adult. I remember seeing one and his marking s are very unusual but I think he looked a lot cuter as a puppy.

  • That was this year, i asked the owner named beverly how much he weighs and she said 32 pounds and now hes a champion, wow go jimmy! sometimes dogs just look big in pictures haha! i remember one time going to look at a stud male here in vegas and he looked great in his photos and when i got there my 45 pound bitch was huge in comparison to the male, who must have been about 35 pounds himself! really shocked me since he was supposed to be a standard haha
  • BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC
It couldn't have been the same dog I seen. Who knows. He's definitely got some unique markings though.

  • Or like your boy Claxxton, when i see his photos of just him he looks like he could be this huge 100 pound dog, then i seen that pic you had of him meeting who was it holly? from playboy? and i couldnt believe it! he was....a normal short bully lol!

i think BT just look much larger then they really are, when i first seen a BT in person i had to ask if they were standards or minis because htey looked so much smaller then i expected them to be, and when i had Cesar up at petsmart i had a man come and chat me up about him and said "i see you have a mini BT" i said nope, hes a standard and the guy couldnt belive it because he too thought they were bigger.
  • Yea you can never tell in pics, they can be so tricky. Claxxton isn't little for his age, but he is so short, he is about 55 pounds and 17 inches tall, so he has no height to him at all. I cant even fathom the amount of times people ask me if there mini's because they expect standards to be so much bigger. Even my boyfriend when I first met him was in shock, he always wanted a bull terrier and thought they got much bigger.
