110 pound bull terrier?

edited December 2012 in Forum Member Photos
On my face book this came up as a bull terrier in another country weighing in at 110 pounds! I find it hard to believe but if so, is that too big? Or does he just look very over weight?

Good God, I thought Rocky was BIG. That's one big Bullie! You know the thing about English Bull Terriers is that regardless their weight they aren't a very big/tall breed of canine. Even this Bullie (as huge as he is) probably isn't all that tall. However, due to the size of his head and bone structure he's packing on some serious mass. I have to be honest, I like them brawny and muscular. I see many scrawny and frail looking bullies that it turns me off when I see that their chest spread looks about the same size as a Dalmatian. The Bull Terrier should be a muscular breed and with muscle you will have weight. I'm in no means thinking a 100 pound Bullie should be the standard but when I see a 45 pound male EBT it doesn't exactly turn my head with excitement. A 65 - 70 pound male EBT is the ideal Bullie for me. Personal opinion of course. Rocky is about 85 pounds right now and I wouldn't trade him for any EBT. He's simply awesome. I bet this guy loves his Bullie to death and that's all that matters. Thanks for sharing the photo Danielle. I don't think he's a hundred pound EBT but he is big and he looks well taken care of. I like him!

  • Im not a big fan of massive bullies such as this guy, hes lovely, but i perfer smaller bullies, not necessarily smaller build, but i like males between 50-60 pounds.

i like a wide range of body types in bullies, my favorite being "bull type" bullies i like bullies who are proportioned, small headed dogs who are thick bodied look so bad or thick headed dogs kept thin again, not my idea of a nice looking dog. if Chimera is going to have a thinner build i donot intend on bulking her up as i think it would simply look terrible.

  • I think its time for a weight limit on standard bull terriers now if people are really going to push for 100 pound bull terriers.

Nothing wrong with liking them skinny, I guess . Most people don't but everybody has their preferences. Once upon a time all Bull Terriers were small figured and athletic looking. Times have changed and it's become apparent that popularity has the EBT evolving into a heavier set breed and it's evident the show circuit welcomes this look and build. However, it isn't uncommon to see the smaller and less muscular build Bullies through small scaled clubs like CKC. Usually these are the long, straight nosed, EBT's with small heads and narrow muzzles.

I agree, there should be a more defined standard in regard to weight and height. Otherwise people will continue to breed toward the popularity of what seems to gather attention at the shows.

  • I feel the breed is going to a far too extreme level of overly round heads and massive weights, i feel its time to get some control over the standard to keep from being such massive differences.
  • Nothing bothers me more than seeing a dog built for a certain body type being conditioned and kept to a far smaller weight than what he should have, its like seeing ribs on an english bull dog, its just not right, though of course, over weight is worse IMO. I dont mind skinny muzzles and strait noses as long as there is NOT a dip beneath the eyes. This breed takes a lot of time to fill out and reach their maximum size, Bowzer for most of his life was a 50 pound dog no matter what I did, now at 4 years old he is easily a 60 pound bull terrier.
  • although he is awsome he looks a bit chubby could just be the pic or the way hes being held. i like mine thick  ut not overly fat and i also like to see the ripples of muscle..

Well until there are strict standards in regard to height and weight people are going to breed toward their preferences and chances are aim their goals towards the majority vote. Currently it's not with the skinny, old school, athletic look. I think most who are looking for the smaller and lighter look of the EBT usually look into the breed called "Miniature Bull Terrier."

Ideally, AKC should put out a standard and base it on the current consensus amongst what is currently being looked at as the epidemy of the today's true Bull Terrier. What structure and conformation would gain more points at a show - the smaller 50 pound EBT or the more muscular 65 pound EBT with correct bone matter and structure to match his weight? I guess that would be up to the judges. But let's face it, many people disagree with the show winning dog and it will always be that way because it always boils down to personal preference.  :D

You're right Leslie, he does look a little chubby. :P  He also has excessive pigmentation on his stomach with all the black spots. But he has a nice wide chest spread, big head, and thick neck. Might not be what I'd consider to be ideal in size but I'd take that over a scrawny Bullie any day. I bet he's a big baby. :o3

  • Me to steve!!! any day!!

  • I think it would be very difficult and a little sad to see a weight/height limit on this breed simply because there are seperate types in the one breed, in order to put a weight range, we would most likly have to erradicate 2 of the other types such as terrier type and/or dalmation type. and i find that a bit sad because apart of the reason i LOVE bull terriers is the variety within the breed! i mean, put 4 differant genetic lines of yorkies together they would all lok identical, put 4 differant lines of bullies together and youve got 4 very differant dogs, even if each one is the same pure white. as far as creating a weight limit such as "cannot be over 90 pounds" i think that would be a good idea.
  • If it were up to me it would not be over 85 pounds, and even that I think is pushing it, ellies son is 13 months now and 70 pounds and that to me is huge!
  • is it dozer whos that large? wow! he doesnt look "huge" it must be muscle how tall is he?
  • he is 21 inches tall at the shoulders and he is 70 pounds, he is a big boy and in person its crazy to see. He was always the biggest in the litter by far.
  • DAMN! yup must be all muscle on that boy!
