Multiple dog household

I have a 4 year old neutered mini bull and a neutered min pin. I want to adopt a deaf female 8 week old bull terrier puppy. My husband is totally against this. Says they will form a pack and no longer be personable. I grew up in a multi dog household and do not really remember this being an issue. Does anyone have any experience, positive or negative?

Thanks, Annette

Due to the fact that I have raised and bred Bull Terriers for many years now I'm going to have to disagree with your husbands belief. Bull Terriers are very active dogs and exert a lot of energy through running around outside and playing. When you have 2 or more Bullies they play and run with each other and have a blast doing so. As far as being personable, they all crave attention and love being around people. Yes, they all have their own personalities but trust me when I say, they all love attention and are as loyal as can be. Many people will say raising 2 dogs vice 1 helps keep them in better shape since they spend a good part of the day playing and keeping active. A deaf puppy would greatly benefit by being raised with another dog too since she would be a lot more alert and attentive to her surroundings and watching all actions from the other dog. She'd probably be a shadow to your older dog. I think it's a wonderful idea and I think your dogs would become close friends and keep in great shape all at the same time while still showing plenty of love and affection for the owners.

  • I 100 percent agree with Steve, my female is much more active since we got my male. Also with a deaf Bullie this would be a great help too to have others keep her/him active and keen and I thinks this will help in training as well because she will have a role model:) theirs always enough love to go around and a rescue is a super idea!!! I have a three yr. Old and two bullies and love it. !!!
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • you already have 2 dogs, they already have formed a pack. But maybe he means personable because the more dogs you have the less one on one time that's available to each given dog. It's true, but 3 is not a large number, I have 4 and a full time job and everyone gets plenty of attention, even one on one.

The only time i see an issue with adding another dog is when the bull terrier has been the single dog for a long period of time, in which it can be very hard to bring in another dog as they become possessive and jealous, i've seen it many many times, but when dogs are already use to sharing, it is OK.
  • Thanks to all of you. I have decided to adopt the deaf puppy. I will be picking her up this weekend. Hopefully the rewards will outweigh the tribulations. My husband will also be able to adapt!
  • just teach it sign language. best of luck!! lets us know how it goes and if you need help doing anything. you can also get the puppy a vibration collar to help signal her for long distance training and work inside the house.

  • CONGRATZ!!! im deff all for the posting of pictures once you get the lil cutie, and good luck with the training it can be difficult in the begining because becase we as a species are so used to useing our voices that im sure youll automatically catch yourself calling to the puppy only to stop and ask yourself "why am i doing that? it cant hear me!"
